Chris Grotton

Architect – Founding Principal

Though born in Maine, Chris grew up in an Army family, moving from state to state throughout his youth. After high school, Chris embarked on his own military journey, serving over 11 years in the Army and as a Technical Engineer in the National Guard. This nomadic lifestyle provided him with unique opportunities for change and exposure to various living conditions, leading him to the study of architecture and design. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Maine at Augusta, followed by a Master of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College.

Over the past two decades, Chris has focused on his career as an architect, with a keen interest in adaptability and experience-based architecture. After working in a traditional architectural firm, he sought further education and insight at a mid-sized design-build firm, gaining hands-on experience and learning the intricacies of the construction industry. There, he helped transform the existing design department into a fully functioning architectural office. This varied work experience has given Chris a deep appreciation for construction, project budgeting, and client relations, as well as a philosophy for impactful and efficient design and construction processes. In 2019, Chris founded Northends Architecture as his platform for creative discovery.

As a counterbalance to architectural design, Chris enjoys being an “outsider.” Embracing the benefits of being in Maine, he likes to spend as much time as possible in nature. When not in the office or exploring the woods, you’ll find him enjoying time at home on the lake with his wife, two kids, and their dog, Scout.
